 Attention City Employees:

Local 9479 is continuing a membership drive for the City Employees of Dallas . It is very important for the City workers to understand the benefits of being a member of the North Texas Association of Public Employees. The Association has been here for over seven years, and has represented over four hundred employees through the grievance procedure. We have won many grievances; appeals and accident review board hearings for our members some with full back pay. We have overturned unjust termination’s, reduced suspensions, corrected pay shortages, stopped harassment, and many other issues that affect our members every day. We have two representatives working in our office for our members. They work from 10am to 2pm Monday through Thursday. They can be reached at the number listed below.

During our membership drive we have heard from many members that SEIU has made outrageous and misleading promises to city employees of a dollar per hour raise. City employees need to be aware of these false promises. Ask the Probation Officers in San Antonio about these promises. The Texas Association of Public Employees (USW) now represents these employees. Ask SEIU if they will represent you in the grievance and appeal procedure. This is a basic service provided by all labor organizations.

Through our current membership drive we need to strengthen our membership for the upcoming 2010 budget hearings. A strong membership will have a positive impact and results on these hearings. It will be an uphill struggle to avoid layoffs, but with a strong local we will succeed.

Sign a card, and join a real labor organization that will fight for you every day. James Crow will be visiting the work-sites to talk to you. He can be reached at the number listed below. Come to the next union meeting and hear our plans for the future.

Meetings are at 6:00 P.M. on the second Thursday of every month at 1408 N. Washington Ave. Suite 202 , Dallas , Texas .

ARE YOU TIRED OF THE CUTS CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES TAKE TO BALANCE THE BUDGET EVERY YEAR?

Steelworker Christopher Head's Address to Council

Honorable Mayor, Council Members, and fellow Citizens of Dallas, I am here to tell you that the Mayor’s plan to layoff almost 800 employees is nothing short of Sabotage.  Anyone with common sense can tell you that a work force already stretched so thin from the last three rounds of RIF and layoffs will collapse.

On Monday [the inauguration], the Mayor alleged that this was foresight, but eliminating 13% of the workforce and expecting it to succeed is nothing short of delusional.

Fellow Tax Paying Citizens of Dallas you have been hoodwinked. The Mayor implied that there would be 200 new beat cops for little to no cost.  That was a lie.

Every officer is fiscally worth two civilian employees. When council says that they will not raise taxes, that money has to come from somewhere.  That cost has and will come from our much battered City services.  I say battered because we have done nothing but lose our benefits and pay for the last 8 years and only had our work loads double through RIF , layoffs, and an ever growing City population.

Mayor you spoke of optimism on Monday [the inauguration] as well.  Where’s the optimism in your 800 layoff plan.  Eliminating the income of several hundred hard working Citizens of Dallas.

How is the City going to be 200 police officers safer when all they will be protecting is a cubical that once officed a half priced, non-armed, professional Civil servant.

How are we to have the finest City you spoke of when our parks pale in comparison to the suburbs and our Arts centers are under funded and reduced to less than skeleton crews?

Fellow taxpaying Citizens of Dallas, I offer solutions:

·        Pay cuts for all managerial staff level L and above, because they can afford it after unethically hording the lion’s share of merit increases

·        Spending freeze for the next 6-12 months, especially on frivolous items such as GPS systems on trash trucks and jogging trail lights on White Rock Lake

·        A moratorium and enforcement of tax incentive districts to produce revenue

·        Proper tax evaluations on Commercial property and Mansions like those on Swiss Avenue

I invite the Council to attend a rally of City Employees at noon at City Hall Plaza.  You will find people not only wishing to save their jobs, but Citizens trying to secure the excellence of serving their fellow Citizens of Dallas.

(Ed. Notes: This is apparently the June 24th address that caused Councilmember Caraway get so...... testy. See the story below for the link to watch this address and Caraway's response)

Make sure you check back here Monday for some interesting emails we dug out of our archives about the SEIU. They make for interesting reading in light of the recent events that occurred in the Sanitation Department this week.
